The Historic Resources Board meeting of November 2, 2026, discussed the planned renovation of the Republic Cafe at 3739 Soledad Street as a Chinatown museum and cultural center. The city purchased the property, engaged San Francisco architectural firm TEF for Chinatown development and exterior design work, and ACES engaged Romano and Min for interior design consulting. ACES said it is developing the museum concept and fundraising plans, with a goal of having funding and designs in place within about five years before engaging a construction contractor. Earlier project history included a $600,000 HUD grant to CSUMB and roof work reportedly costing roughly $200,000–$250,000; asbestos discovery curtailed that funding. No new contract awards, procurement votes, or project spending approvals were made at this meeting.
The board also reviewed draft historic-resource plaque designs; preliminary material prices of about $400 for bronze, $200 for aluminum, and $100 for wood were unverified estimates, not manufacturer quotes. Members emphasized developing ordinance language and eligibility criteria before settling plaque specifications, and staff agreed to recirculate a draft for discussion. The historic resources survey is delayed, with public review and adoption expected to begin in early 2027. Members raised concerns about the board’s limited role in reviewing alterations: staff explained that only officially designated historic properties receive board review, while properties on surveys receive advisory staff comments. The board requested a list of designated properties for its next meeting. The minutes and next year’s meeting schedule were approved by unanimous votes; no procurement-related motions or votes were identified.
