The City of Aiken Design Review Board met November 5, 2026, to review historic-district applications and discuss protection of the city’s parkways. The Board approved applications to designate 507 Sumter Street Southeast as non-contributing and to enclose a carport with a garage door and windows, replace siding at 560 Newberry Street Southwest, change roofing at 424 Berry Road Southwest to standing-seam metal, and install a replica three-dimensional clamshell awning at the Dibble Memorial Library. The votes on these applications were unanimous. No contract awards, vendor selections, spending approvals, or procurement activity were identified.
The Board discussed options for protecting the parkways, including individual historic-site designation and existing ordinance provisions. Members agreed to pursue a joint work session with City Council; staff will coordinate the next steps. The Board also noted an ordinance amendment previously approved by City Council that allows review of certain undesignated properties over 50 years old as contributing properties. An executive session covered legal advice and procedures; no action or votes followed.
