The City of Mount Vernon Public Safety Committee met on November 4, 2026, primarily to continue discussion of the 2027 draft budget; no votes or contract awards were reported. The Mayor said the updated draft would add about $2 million to reserves without using reserves to balance the budget, raising utility taxes, or cutting currently filled positions. The budget proposes three new police officers, using a federal grant awarded for four entry-level officers to accelerate hiring. Finance staff described a $1.19 million grant, including about $230,380 for equipment and up to two vehicles; the outlined staffing scenario estimated a $352,000 city contribution and about $838,000 in savings compared with funding the positions without the grant. Members discussed the operational need for added patrol coverage. The draft also includes grant-supported cyber/network resilience and added capacity to deliver transportation improvement projects, including streets and sidewalks.
Members also discussed possible spending on meeting interpretation (equipment and headphone quotes were under $3,000; interpreter service costs were not stated) and Sunday library hours, budgeted at 1.5 FTE, with a possible short pilot estimated at roughly $10,000. No decision was made on either item. The Mayor proposed a CDBG plan amendment, expected to come before Council December 9, to combine about $110,000 in unused prior awards for affordable-homebuyer assistance related to the Mountain Gate development. Staff also said an interest-allocation ordinance was ready for Council consideration and noted the separate levy deadline. These matters remained under discussion; no procurement approvals were recorded.
