The Fitchburg Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission met on November 4, 2026. The commission discussed a draft ordinance that would allow bicycles on sidewalks; staff will work with the city attorney on revised language for a future review. Members also began an annual review of the bicycle and pedestrian plan, including progress metrics, updated maps, and potential Safe Routes to School planning. Staff noted that the Transportation Alternatives Program can support infrastructure, education, and planning, and discussed exploring planning-fund opportunities and coordinating with local schools and advocacy groups. No grant application, contract, or procurement decision was approved at this meeting.
Staff updates covered several active infrastructure projects: final design and property acquisition for the County Highway MM underpass, final design for an 8- or 10-foot path along Fitcherona Road, and a new multi-use path on Seminole Highway. The Military Ridge State Trail is expected to have a temporary detour during construction next summer. Whalen Road work is substantially complete, with fog-line repainting planned for next year; staff noted that the earlier project had been constrained by budget and grant-capacity limitations. A council representative said the proposed 2027 budget and council amendments were scheduled for council consideration on November 10. No contract awards, bid approvals, or specific spending votes were identified.
