The November 4, 2026 Redmond Planning Commission study session focused on proposed zoning regulations for commercial drone land uses and revisions to the city’s tree code. Commissioners discussed the interim official control that currently restricts drone uses, questions about how a previously permitted drone hub received approval, and what regulatory approach best fits Redmond. They requested clearer information on the city’s rationale and alternatives, regional activity, potential uses and scale, environmental and noise impacts, and related legal or administrative processes. Staff agreed to include responses to commissioner and public comments in the November 18 meeting materials, ahead of the scheduled public hearing. A member of the public also urged site-specific environmental review and noise measurement for drone hubs and stronger tree protections.
The tree-code discussion covered arborist documentation for hazardous-tree and exception requests, replacement-tree verification, canopy goals and updated data, simpler requirements for small projects, stronger protection for heritage trees, and potential metrics and penalties. Staff presented proposed revisions, including clearer applicability and violation language, stronger tree-protection fencing, neighborhood-priority replacement planting, and changes to incentives and regulated-tree definitions; the commission offered feedback for further revisions, but took no vote on the amendments. The commission approved its October 28 meeting summary and later adjourned by motion. No procurement, contract award, or spending action was identified.
