Gratiot County Board of Commissioners Meeting 11/3/26
Body
Gratiot County
Date
November 02, 2026
Jurisdiction
State & Local
At its November 3, 2026 meeting, the Gratiot County Board of Commissioners heard extensive public comment on housing and tax increment financing (TIF), then approved Resolution 26-470 approving the Brownfield Plan for the Lakeside Estates development in Pine River Township. The vote was 3–2, with Commissioners Bailey, Gay, and Owens voting yes and Bunting and Sapsie voting no. A motion to postpone consideration until commissioners received additional training failed. Supporters said TIF could help close the financing gap for new homes and shift some infrastructure costs and risk to developers; opponents raised concerns about the project’s location, effects on Lakeside Estates residents, future tax revenue, and whether the development would meet local housing needs. One commissioner cited approximately $2.3 million in taxes at issue, while speakers described TIF reimbursements as coming from an approved portion of future tax increments over a period of up to about 24 years. Municipal representatives also voiced support for considering proposals individually. The discussion may inform future county decisions on housing-related Brownfield plans; no other contract award or bid approval was identified.
The board also approved payment of $104,006.57 in outstanding invoices and placed the check register on file. The administrator reported that county employee open enrollment would move to MESA from Acrisure. Other updates included a planned $38 million wastewater-treatment upgrade in Alma, a regional master-plan process, and local grant activity, but no county procurement action on those items was reported.
