The City of Sunnyside Planning Commission held its regular meeting on September 8, 2026, including a quasi-judicial public hearing on the Sugar Beet Ranch planned unit development and preliminary plat (PUD-26-1, PLP-26-2, and SEPA 26-4). The proposal includes 97 residential units, three commercial/mixed-use lots, private streets, and utility extensions, with plans to adapt the former sugar mill building for commercial, hospitality, and residential uses. Staff recommended approval subject to conditions covering civil plans, fire access, stormwater, utilities, construction and bonding, and other requirements. The commission voted to recommend approval to the City Council. The applicant said contracts were ready and that construction could begin after plans are submitted, reviewed, and approved; no city contract award or purchasing decision was made. The discussion also noted a mitigation contribution of the developer’s proportional share—about 7%—toward the cost of planned state transportation improvements estimated at more than $3 million.
Commissioners also discussed potential historic-preservation grants and the steps Sunnyside would need to take to become a Certified Local Government, including ordinance changes and a historic preservation commission. Staff gave an update on the city’s comprehensive-plan periodic update and its grant-related schedule. No procurement activity was identified.
