Grants & Funding

The Salinas Public Arts Commission met on November 2, 2026. A resident asked the commission to explore a grant opportunity for an annual fantastical-animal art festival; commissioners expressed interest but took no action to approve funding. A presentation reviewed the successful Alebrijes and Nahuales exhibition, including eight sculptures at five locations, community partnerships, and increased traffic at Northridge Mall. Participants discussed a possible future, locally focused arts event and artist workshops, but no project, grant, or spending decision was made. No contract awards, vendor selections, or dollar amounts were reported.

The commission approved a subcommittee of three commissioners to work with staff on the FY 2027–28 public art plan, which must be brought to the City Council before April 1. The plan will return to the full commission for recommendation; the discussion noted that the prior exhibition was funded through the previous annual plan. The commission also elected Carlos Cortez as chair and Juan Carlos Gonzalez as vice chair, and approved the June 15, 2026 minutes.
