Monticello Public Schools held a special school board meeting on October 26, 2026, to address a candidate’s withdrawal from campaigning amid residency questions and consider steps to protect the integrity of the November 3 school board election. The superintendent described a corrective-action agreement under Minnesota Statute 204B.44D, reviewed with Wright County election officials and the Secretary of State’s office, which provides that votes cast for the withdrawing candidate will not be counted, the three highest vote-getters among the remaining candidates will be declared elected, and notices will be posted at polling places and locations handling absentee ballots. All six candidates had signed the agreement.
The board approved the agreement 6–0. The superintendent said the agreement would avoid court proceedings, provide a faster resolution, and allow voters to be notified before the election; legal counsel recommended proceeding. Board members noted the district had spent considerable time and money on the issue, but no cost estimate or procurement action, contract award, or budget allocation was identified.
