At the October 28, 2026 Carmel Clay Schools Board of School Trustees meeting, the board considered a resolution responding to severe water-main-break damage at the former Orchard Park Elementary building. District staff, the City of Carmel, and Fanning Howey/Skillman representatives described extensive flooding, subsurface erosion, foundation and roof movement, damaged mechanical systems, and safety concerns; the city had designated the building unsafe. The engineering team advised against further capital investment in repairs. The resolution noted that the district had spent more than $1 million on utilities and maintenance from June 2021 through October 2026.
The resolution would direct the superintendent to take steps toward demolishing the building, including inviting quotes from Renassant Inc. and Danny Excavating, and to report by March 31, 2027, on potential future site uses and financial projections. The board discussed whether part of the building could be salvaged, but made no final decision on future site use. A motion and second to approve the resolution are recorded, but the transcript does not clearly capture the vote outcome.
