At its October 28, 2026 regular meeting, the Michigan City Sanitary District Board of Commissioners approved a security gate at the Hitchcock property, based on an approximately $23,000 quote from Fence Masters, with funding from a property-improvement line item. The Board also approved a declaratory resolution for a bond anticipation note and related financing of up to $20 million for wastewater and sewer-system improvements. The listed work includes treatment-plant rehabilitation and primary clarifier improvements, lift-station rehabilitation, outfall and sewer improvements, septic-system elimination, and communications and security upgrades. This was an initial financing step: the resolution was to go to Common Council and return to the Board for a public hearing and further consideration. The Board also approved payment of claims; the transcript’s amount is garbled. Staff reported more than $11,000 in emergency repairs, including a bar-screen auger repair and replacement of a failed effluent auto sampler.
The Board tabled a proposed policy on gravity sewers and privately maintained low-pressure systems for review, and staff said the 2027 utility emergency-repair project manual would return at the November meeting. Staff also described a potential future grant opportunity for four refuse trucks, possibly with up to 100% funding, plus possible facility and fueling improvements; no grant award or purchase was approved. The Board approved transferring four district-owned parcels to the Michigan City Redevelopment Commission, with no charge reported. Staff discussed a temporary pause on sewer connection permits while the district reviews capacity, rates, and service agreements, but no vote on that item is evident in the transcript.
