The Mercer Island Arts Council’s regular meeting on October 21, 2026, included updates on public art funding and projects. Staff reported that City Council had awarded the Luther Burbank Park waterfront improvements and docks project to Quig Bros Incorporated; construction was expected to begin the following month and take about 15 months. The project’s contract value was not stated. The Mercer Island Medallions public art project was approved as part of a construction bid award and was described as an approximately $100,000 installation. The city’s 1% for Art fund had a balance of about $194,000; 13 qualifying capital projects contributed just over $52,000 in 2025. A $19,000 allocation had been appropriated for Gateway to the Gardens restoration, with some costs expected to be reimbursed through an insurance claim, and staff were working to contract for restoration of damaged gateway figures.
Council members discussed pending public art donation proposals and asked staff to identify viable installation locations and clarify the donation-review process; no donation was accepted at this meeting. Members also discussed updating the 1% fund ordinance and the public art work plan. By motion, the Arts Council endorsed the four proposed priorities for the 2027–2028 City Arts and Culture Work Plan. Other updates included the upcoming PROS Plan process and its December 7 joint kickoff meeting. No new contract award or procurement vote was taken by the Arts Council.
