The Mercer Island Utility Board met on October 13, 2026, to review 2027 utility rate recommendations. The board approved staff’s proposed increases: water 8%, sewer 7%, stormwater 6%, and EMS 4%. The EMS motion passed despite one nay vote; the other rate motions passed without recorded opposition. For a sample single-family customer, the combined water, sewer, and stormwater increase was estimated at about $37.66 every two months, with roughly $16 attributable to King County’s wastewater treatment rate increase. Staff said the sewer increase also reflects major local infrastructure needs and the utility’s reinvestment goals; EMS costs are primarily driven by employee compensation adjustments.

Capital and funding discussions included a planned 2027 debt issuance for water-system work and a new water supply line project estimated at more than $18 million, alongside other water-system renewal projects. Staff noted that water capital spending is expected to peak over the next two years, while significant sewer investments—including work involving the underwater lake line and pump stations—are also anticipated. No contract awards, vendor selections, or purchasing approvals were identified. The board was also advised that updated water, sewer, and stormwater planning documents would be reviewed in 2027.
