The Town of Apex Town Council held a work session on October 29, 2026, to review a proposed community readiness plan and discuss updates to public participation, social media, and travel and expense policies. The readiness plan covers artificial intelligence, climate, housing, and water, with shorter- and longer-term projects and organizational actions. Council members emphasized moving cybersecurity and incident preparedness into the near-term priorities, including assessing protections for critical systems and operational alternatives. Other proposed work included sustainability and stormwater measures, housing partnerships and development tools, and regional water planning. The portfolio will be revised after public input and brought back for council review; no contract awards, procurement approvals, or specific project funding allocations were made during the session.
The policy discussion addressed spending controls for elected officials. The proposed travel and expense framework retains the current $1,500 annual member allowance, uses federal GSA per diem rates, and includes a proposed per-event limit that council members discussed but did not conclusively resolve. Members supported treating intergovernmental working meals as a town expense rather than an individual allowance, and agreed that unauthorized expenditures should be reported to the full council before payment or other action; officials should not independently commit town funds or bypass purchasing procedures. The discussion also covered a July 1–December 1 restriction on town support for elected officials’ events during Apex election years. Draft policies will be refined and reviewed by legal staff and the Governance Committee. No formal motions or votes were reported.
