Suicide Prevention Advisory Committee Meeting, 10/28/2026

The City of Laredo Suicide Prevention Advisory Committee met on October 28, 2026. Members approved the August and September minutes, including a correction to the August minutes. The Laredo Police Department’s Mental Evaluation Unit reported elevated emergency detention calls (678 year to date), 452 emergency detention reports, 67 attempted-suicide reports year to date, and 15 deaths by suicide year to date. Members discussed improving timely communication with schools after incidents so schools can support affected students and siblings, while respecting privacy requirements. Police representatives also described staffing shortages and ongoing efforts to expand crisis co-response with mental health personnel; they said a related City Council item had advanced, but no contract, funding amount, or procurement decision was presented.

The Public Health Department reported 2,087 year-to-date calls to the local 988 call center and described QPR gatekeeper training and community mental-health initiatives. Committee members shared outreach, school presentations, and community events, including the upcoming free Lucha for Life walk/run, which will invite community resource vendors. No procurement activity, contract award, or spending-related vote was identified.
