At its October 28, 2026 meeting, the Oshkosh Area Board of Education reviewed and approved the 2026–27 budget and tax levy. The hearing opened with a dispute over a deficient public notice: it was published only 10 days before the hearing and reportedly omitted required information. After consulting legal counsel, the board proceeded, with counsel advising that missing the November 1 levy deadline could have more serious consequences; board members also called for a properly noticed opportunity for additional community input. The budget presentation cited roughly $7.8 million in earlier reductions and further savings needed to balance the budget. The district reported a total school tax levy of about $67.7 million and referendum capital-project expenditures of about $102 million. Both the budget resolution and tax-levy resolution passed, though a member opposed the levy vote over the notice issue.
Facilities and program spending were also discussed. Reported savings options for the new middle school were estimated at $1.2–$1.4 million, with final validation expected after bids opened November 10; the North auditorium was described as about $5 million over budget, while the projects were reported as remaining within the overall referendum budget. Two proposed high-school courses were not advanced: criminal justice, estimated to require $20,000–$25,000 for textbooks, and West show choir, estimated at $30,000 in staffing plus $25 per student; officials cited staffing and resource constraints rather than program merit. Other course additions or modifications were described as supportable through existing funds or grants with no general-fund impact. The board also approved a superintendent contract amendment by a 4–3 vote to correct retirement-contribution allocations; it was described as fiscally neutral, with $10,338.63 to be reimbursed and $7,835.97 in future contributions redirected.
