The Beaufort County Council and Beaufort County Board of Education held a joint meeting on October 27, 2026. The school district reported student achievement gains, including a record 91.1% graduation rate, and discussed its instructional supports. Procurement and budget matters centered on a proposed multi-county industrial park (MCIP) financing arrangement: the district CFO said the proposal could redirect approximately $5.5 million from school operating and debt-service revenues over 20 years, as part of a roughly $10 million request. She raised concerns about the district’s strained budget, upcoming operating costs, transparency, and the absence of instructional-facility funding in the proposal. Members expressed opposing views, but no vote or action on the MCIP was taken during the meeting. The CFO also cited an earlier Port Royal redevelopment arrangement capped at $300,000 annually for 20 years; after 14 years without bonds or completed projects, $1.2 million had been returned to the district, with no interest earnings identified.
Facilities discussions covered the planned renovation of the Beaufort High School pool, following the completed Bluffton pool project. Beaufort High design work is underway, with construction anticipated to begin in spring if bidding is successful and last about 12 months; FY2028 funding is planned for Battery Creek pool work and design. County staff also said four multipurpose fields at Burke Halter are expected to open in 2027–28, with shared use by the district and county. The county is exploring a possible expansion of the Lobeco library into the adjacent former school building; the library board requested more information and is scheduled to consider the matter on November 18. No contract awards or procurement approvals were recorded. The agenda was approved by motion and second.
