The City of Monterey Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP) Committee met October 28, 2026, to review neighborhood project nominations ahead of a future funding vote. The city received 44 nominations, consolidated some proposals to 41 projects with estimated costs of about $13.7 million, and reported $2.6 million available—enough for roughly nine to 10 projects. Staff reported that an RFP for the Veterans Park bike path was released on Monday. Installation of the El Estero large-barbecue-area shade structure was scheduled to begin the following week, with structural columns expected November 3.

The committee discussed project priorities and feasibility, including street and sidewalk safety work, park improvements, forest fuel reduction and management, drainage, and affordable workforce housing. Staff said maintaining the current forest-management and fuel-reduction work could cost about $1 million annually, and noted Cal Fire grants as a funding source for related projects. Members raised concerns about project eligibility, costs, permitting, property agreements, and opportunities to combine projects or use grants. No contract awards, procurement approvals, or funding votes were recorded; the discussion was preparatory to a later vote.
