The Town of Christiansburg Emergency Services Committee met on October 26, 2026. Members discussed anticipated county funding for town fire and EMS services; the county’s allocation is not final until its budget is approved, and the funding formula will be reviewed annually. Staff are building a shared process with the EMS billing company to track call volume and recovered revenue by town and county location, while accounting for delayed payments. The committee also discussed potentially increasing EMS overtime funding during the budget process and hiring two fire department employees after January 1, subject to the current budget and recruitment process. No formal votes were reported.
Fire apparatus and capital funding were prominent topics. Two town fire trucks are expected around December 1 after final inspections and completion of punch-list work; the department plans to train five initial operators, who will then train other staff. The department is trying to sell an older truck, currently priced at $25,000, but had received no bids at the time of the meeting. Officials said fire-recovery revenue was intended for the fire apparatus replacement fund but may have gone to the general fund; they will verify its destination and seek to correct it. Approximately $2 million was moved from the fire station reserve fund for the aquatic center HVAC project, with no immediate repayment plan identified; a facilities space study is expected to inform future station planning. Potential use of fire-recovery funds for equipment for the new trucks was also discussed.
