The City of Norwalk Historical Commission met on October 28, 2026. Commissioners received an update on the Smith Street Jail renovation: framing and most rough plumbing are complete, electrical work is starting, and a conservator advised the contractor on preserving jail-cell graffiti and treating the walls. Repairs to specialty glass at another building are estimated at about $10,000, with additional plaster repairs planned. The WPA murals project remains unresolved: moving the murals could cost approximately $300,000–$400,000 because of asbestos in the adhesive, so the commission discussed restoring them in place; unspent funds designated for the project cannot be reassigned and may need to be returned to the city. No contract award or spending vote was reported.

A working group is exploring a citywide historical plan, potentially with a consultant and funding from a State Historic Preservation Office survey-and-planning grant, alongside possible city budget support and collaboration with preservation and arts organizations. Staff said the grants coordinator and purchasing department could support the effort; the group plans to continue its funding and grant research. The commission also discussed the status of proposed demolition-delay ordinance revisions, including the proposed 180-day delay and who would pay for third-party review, but no decision was made. Commissioners approved the meeting schedule as amended, including a correction to the July date, and discussed seeking approval to hold a future meeting at Mill Hill.
