The Carmel Central School District Board of Education met on October 27, 2026. The board approved the appointment of CS Architects (also referred to as CS Arch) as district architect for the 2026–27 school year, following an RFP, evaluation, and interview process. No contract amount was stated. The board noted that anticipated facilities work includes a gym floor project and addressing water runoff at the transportation facility. A separate resolution authorizing $869,000 in additional special-education placement expenses was approved; administrators said the amount would come from unappropriated fund balance, that the action would not affect the tax cap, and that the district expected to replenish its fund balance after the audit. The superintendent said the next budget proposal would account for increased special-education costs. A donation of 15 bags of soil for a high-school sensory garden was also accepted through the consent agenda.
Budget pressures, property taxes, staffing, and possible use of attrition were discussed, but no staffing reductions or other purchasing decisions were approved. The superintendent reported that elementary students averaged about eight minutes of daily computer use during the period tracked and said the district was considering screen-time guidance and budget-contingent media specialists. A community member proposed a $139 vehicle barrier for Kent Elementary, but the board said building security matters could not be discussed at the board table; no purchase or action was identified. The board also discussed revising its policy-development process, including advance notice for proposals, and referred the policy discussion back to committee; no policy change was adopted.
