Policy Subcommittee

The MPS School Committee Policy Subcommittee met on October 29, 2026. Members discussed revising the facility-naming policy, including clearer criteria, a process for evaluating requests, and a possible waiting period between naming requests. A member will prepare a draft; the committee also suggested reviewing the memorials policy alongside it. The subcommittee discussed the Massachusetts Freedom to Read law and MASC’s recommended revisions to four library-related policies. Members favored consulting district librarians and considering how to align existing policies with the new law, but took no action on those revisions at this meeting.

The subcommittee voted 2–0 to recommend that the full School Committee rescind policies IE, IHAI, IMA, and JKA, which members considered redundant or no longer necessary; those recommendations are to be placed on the full committee’s November agenda. The subcommittee also approved its September meeting minutes. No procurement, contract, spending, or budget activity was identified.
