The October 26, 2026 joint workshop of the LaPorte County Board of Commissioners and County Council focused on moisture, mold, and air-quality problems at the courthouse. Officials and project and environmental specialists described damage across multiple floors, including courtrooms and offices, linked to water intrusion and leaking or poorly draining mini-split HVAC units. Affected areas have been contained and dried, with air scrubbers operating where needed; further assessment is required to determine the full scope and keep employees and the public safe while the building remains in use. Temporary courtroom arrangements are underway, and staff are also developing a contingency plan for temporary heat.

The county has not yet approved a repair contract or major spending. Participants discussed obtaining pricing to clean or replace mini-split units and agreed that experts should complete a courthouse-wide assessment and define the remediation work before reconstruction is bid. Officials noted the work could be costly and that the county’s ability to finance a larger project is constrained while its 2025 financial statements and credit rating are pending; a possible cost of about $250,000 to accelerate the process was mentioned. Staff will check the available cable-franchise-fee balance for temporary courtroom audio equipment. No procurement award, spending vote, or formal motion was reported.
