Rutherford County Board of Education work session, September 22, 2026: The board reviewed budget and staffing matters, including proposed amendments of $377,225 for the annual charter-school funding true-up and $276,000 for three additional school nursing positions responding to increased student medical needs. A separate $1,341,605 amendment would recognize TISA and other payments made directly to charter schools and related accounts as an accounting adjustment. These items were being advanced for further county review; no final spending vote is recorded in the transcript. The board also reviewed Fund 189 capital-project balances, including approximately $1.6 million associated with a future high school and about $2.7 million for McFadden, and discussed whether to prioritize a new high school or several smaller facility projects. Purchase orders for testing and due diligence at the Dismuth property were prepared but await county funding designation. With the property contract nearing its November 17 expiration and studies unlikely to be complete by then, members supported placing an extension request on Thursday’s agenda.

The board discussed two school-transportation contractors unable to resolve staffing issues within their notice periods; staff recommended a 30-day extension for one and said routes for both could currently be covered. No final extension decision is recorded. Gossett Bus Services requested an additional route, but transportation staff raised concerns about the company’s current route coverage and agreed to provide the board with performance information; no award was made. Members also raised a possible countywide CDL training pipeline with the highway and solid-waste departments, and discussed support for considering a qualified 22-year-old veteran driver under a statutory exception. Other procurement-relevant discussion included the upcoming state-approved social studies textbook adoption process, with public review sessions planned, but no materials or vendors were selected.
