Cowlitz County Commissioners’ final department budget workshop, held Oct. 26, 2026 (per the meeting title), reviewed 2027 budget requests and reductions. No contract awards, bid approvals, or procurement votes were identified; commissioners deferred budget decisions for further review. The Sheriff’s Office reported a pending $2.5 million state grant request that could cover existing personnel and equipment, including vehicles. Its equipment reserve was projected at about $1.306 million, with a $290,000 transfer requested; radio replacement costs will depend on the equipment selected, and no selection was made. The office also cited a $20,000 software-maintenance reduction from canceling a program.

Emergency Management proposed using its reserve for an approximately $90,000 emergency operations center IT upgrade, roughly $20,000 for satellite communications, and a $34,000 flood-response trailer. Commissioners discussed maintaining board oversight of reserve spending and did not decide on the proposals. The Auditor described plans to present a 2027 recording-system modernization proposal; the current system is 28 years old, but no cost or vendor was named. The workshop also covered staffing and operating-budget pressures, including election costs and reductions across departments, without approving a specific purchase or contract.
