10-27-2026 WCSD Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees

The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on October 27, 2026. The main procurement action was unanimous approval of Core West Construction, doing business as Core Construction, as construction manager at risk for GMP 1 of the new elementary school at the Edward L. Pine Middle School site. The GMP was $6,248,571, with a $350,000 owner’s contingency, for a total of $6,598,571. Staff said the bids were competitively solicited from prequalified subcontractors and that all contractors for the two scopes in this phase were local to Northern Nevada. Work is scheduled to begin in November, with a subsequent GMP for the building and site amenities anticipated to return to the board in January. The project includes ground-source heating and cooling wells intended to reduce utility costs.

The board also unanimously approved the temporary closure of Fred W. Trainer Middle School after the 2028–29 school year for reconstruction of an elementary school, and approved beginning the repurposing framework for Glen Duncan, Dorothy Lemelson, and Rita Cannon elementary schools after the 2029–30 school year. These decisions advance the district’s facility modernization plan and lead to zoning and community-engagement work; no related savings estimate was provided. Consent agenda items 2.02–2.13 were approved unanimously. Public comment raised concerns about student-data security and vendors, including PowerSchool and SafeVoice, but no related purchasing or renewal decision was made.
