The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees’ regular meeting on October 27, 2026, included approval of the first guaranteed maximum price (GMP 1) for a new elementary school at the Edward L. Pine Middle School site. The board unanimously approved Core West, Inc., doing business as Core Construction, as construction manager at risk under agreement 26-27-C-9-a: $6,248,571 for the work, plus a $350,000 owner’s contingency, for a total of $6,598,571. Staff reported that bids were issued to prequalified subcontractors on August 11 and sealed bids received September 3, and that all contractors for this phase are local to Northern Nevada. GMP 1 covers initial site work, including grading, utilities, and geothermal wells; a second GMP for the building and related site amenities is anticipated to return to the board in January.

The board also unanimously approved the temporary closure of Fred W. Trainer Middle School after the 2028–29 school year and the change of use of Glenn Duncan, Dorothy Lemelson, and Rita Cannon elementary schools. These actions support school-reconstruction and repurposing plans, with a new elementary school at the Trainer site anticipated to open in 2030–31; student assignments and boundaries will be considered through a zoning advisory process. Consent agenda items 2.02–2.13 were approved unanimously. Public comment raised concerns about student-data breaches and vendors handling student information, but no specific procurement action on those concerns was identified.
