The City of Cerritos City Council’s regular meeting on October 26, 2026 included several fiscal and infrastructure matters. The council unanimously (5–0) introduced an ordinance to implement California AB 1572 restrictions on irrigation of non-functional turf. Staff is still assessing affected city properties and potential conversion costs, which will be brought back to council; the city also plans outreach to affected commercial and HOA customers. Staff reported that reclaimed water is managed through a separate enterprise fund, and the city is preparing a rate analysis for that system. The council also approved changes to advisory-board meeting schedules and replaced monthly auto allowances with mileage reimbursement; the resulting savings will depend on mileage claims. The fourth-quarter FY 2025–26 budget report showed $135.7 million in revenue (96% of amended budget), projected sales tax of $43.4 million—about $400,000 below budget—and $22 million encumbered for capital improvements. Council considered the report and ratification of budget amendments.
During council comments, the mayor requested consensus to direct staff to include in the November 9 report a request for proposals to explore the potential sale of the city’s water system. Council members expressed consensus, while emphasizing that this was an information-gathering step, not a decision to sell; the city attorney noted that employee meet-and-confer would be required. The council selected November 30 for a strategic-plan study session intended to inform future budget priorities. No vendor selection or contract award was identified.
