At the October 26, 2026 regular Southfield City Council meeting, the council approved consent agenda items that included purchasing ammunition for the Police Department, a preventive-maintenance agreement for the water-meter reading collector, and a vehicle purchase authorization discussed in connection with the city’s water-main work. Council also approved a change order for traffic-calming measures tied to the Southampton pavement and water-main improvement project. The estimated cost was $160,000, with staff expecting the negotiated amount to be closer to $150,000; local street funds would be used. The change order passed, as did the establishment of the West 12 Mile Road Commercial Rehabilitation District No. 1 under PA 210 to support rehabilitation of a commercial property by Suites of Southfield LLC. The developer described a $400,000 building purchase and a further $274,200 rehabilitation investment and requested a five-year tax exemption certificate; the transcript records the district approval but does not clearly show a vote on the certificate.
Council approved a conditional rezoning for a proposed 56-apartment redevelopment of the former Specs Howard building, with site-plan review still to come. It also approved zoning text changes concerning career and technical education and allowing public parks and facilities by right in specified residential districts. A proposed accessory dwelling unit amendment was postponed to the first regular meeting in January for further consideration. Separately, the city said Ordinance 1835, its residential point-of-sale inspection requirement, remains in effect while under review; a proposed inheritance-related exemption is scheduled for further discussion, and no amendment has yet been approved.
