The City of Birmingham, Michigan, held a joint City Commission and Planning Board meeting on October 26, 2026, to review progress on the zoning ordinance update and discuss the consultant’s preliminary recommendations report. Participants emphasized that the report was an initial draft informed partly by public input and that the Planning Board would continue reviewing it over the coming months. Discussion focused on simplifying and consolidating the ordinance, neighborhood character, tree canopy, residential design and building bulk, nonconforming lot standards, transitional zones, and potential density changes. Several speakers stressed that recommendations should align with the adopted master plan and that significant policy decisions remain with the City Commission.

The Planning Board chair said accessory dwelling units were unlikely to receive further consideration, given the board’s limited interest and public feedback. On the former downtown Parking Assessment District, participants distinguished zoning work from broader policy and legal questions; the chair said a detailed legal opinion would be needed before considering changes, and the Planning Board would need direction from the Commission to expand its work on the matter. Public comment also raised a proposed police-staffing analysis using AI and a possible additional annual policing cost of up to $500,000, as well as a request to reduce a $1,700 FOIA fee; no action was taken on these requests. No procurement activity, contract or bid decisions, or spending-related motions were identified. The only vote recorded was approval to adjourn.
