At its October 26, 2026 City Council meeting, the City of Greenbelt discussed several potential funding and procurement matters, but approved no contract awards or bids. The city manager reported receiving $231,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for Cherrywood Lane resurfacing; staff will prepare procurement documents for council review and approval. The city also received $328,000 for police communications encryption upgrades, including radios. A multi-year Bradford pear replacement program is underway, with an estimated total cost exceeding $1 million. Residents asked the city to consider support for a proposed regional robotics center and to revisit an additional $25,000 for Greenbelt Cinema, but no funding decisions were made on those requests.
Council reviewed a draft scope for an RFP to hire a consultant to develop an implementation plan for the city’s equity, inclusion, and belonging work. Discussion included broadening the scope to address equitable delivery of city services, accessibility, and prior efforts; staff indicated it would incorporate edits and continue preparing the solicitation, with no vote to authorize its release. Council also approved, 5–2, a resolution affirming the city’s intent to acquire the former Greenbelt High School property if it is decommissioned, while noting the potential costs and historic-preservation requirements. The resolution does not itself authorize an acquisition.
