The Salt Lake City School District Board of Education held a study session on gang prevention on October 20, 2026. Staff and Salt Lake City Police Department representatives described the Promising Youth Program (PYP), school-based mentoring and intervention, summer activities, and coordination with school resource officers, social workers, peer court, and community partners. They reported 62 student referrals and 35 program completions last year, more than 4,377 youth and family contacts, and positive changes in risk and protective factors among participants. The police department reported 90 newly documented gang members through September 30, including youth ages 11–18, and discussed prevention and intervention needs in district schools.
Board members asked about program outcomes, capacity, referrals, and funding. The district said prior gang-prevention grant funding is no longer available following legislative changes; related funds were incorporated into the broader at-risk allocation, but the district has not specifically budgeted that increase for gang prevention. The district’s historical contribution was described as averaging in the mid-$40,000s over five years, while PYP is continuing this year with city grant support. Coordination with Choose Gang Free remains in planning pending a county proposal. No contract award, procurement vote, or spending motion was reported; board members requested a follow-up session on outcomes, funding, and other assigned items.
