The City of Detroit’s District 2 evening community meeting was held October 20, 2026. Public comments focused heavily on the proposed Renaissance Center redevelopment, including concerns about its community-benefits process, transparency, and reported tax incentives exceeding $500 million for a project valued at more than $1 billion. Speakers urged council to take time to secure stronger community benefits, such as revenue sharing and public transit. Data centers were also discussed: residents called for a two-year pause while the city studies impacts and develops regulations, and one speaker urged Detroit to pursue investment while seeking an equity stake for the community. A previously passed council resolution supporting a two-year data-center moratorium was referenced; no new vote or procurement decision on these projects occurred at this meeting.
Other funding-related comments included a request to budget for Detroit’s Japan sister-city program in FY2027 and a proposal for $500 youth mini-grants in each council district to develop ideas for data centers. A councilmember’s video cited $250,000 previously directed to Detroit-based and minority-owned farms and collectives. Residents also raised neighborhood property and development concerns, food-cart ordinance changes, transportation safety, and job training; a skilled-trades task-force meeting was announced. No contract awards, bids, vendor selections, or new spending approvals were identified.
