MCPS-MD held a virtual community engagement session on October 23, 2026, about its elementary and middle school closure and consolidation study. Officials reviewed the factors required under Maryland regulations and MCPS policies, including enrollment, facility condition, transportation, educational programs, finances, student relocation, and community impacts. They shared enrollment and utilization data, discussed staffing and program considerations, and gathered anonymous public feedback. No procurement award, spending vote, or other purchasing decision was made during the session.
Officials said a consulting contract for the study was awarded in July, but did not identify the contractor or contract amount. They reported more than $5 billion in identified capital needs over six years—about $850 million annually—compared with roughly $300 million in average annual capital funding (also cited as $315 million in a participant-response option). The study’s first phase runs through April 2027: the superintendent’s recommendation is expected February 4, public hearings are planned for February and March, and the Board of Education is scheduled to make a final decision April 15, 2027. Any resulting closures, consolidations, or boundary changes would take effect in the 2029–30 school year. The community feedback form is open through November 4, with feedback to be summarized for the Board on November 19.
