At the October 26, 2026 New Kent County Board of Supervisors work session, the Housing Advisory Committee presented a proposed housing trust fund, including a request for up to $250,000 for safe-home repairs and a separate workforce-housing development program. No funding was approved; supervisors said the proposal would be considered through the budget process and discussed defining program outcomes and possibly asking the Partnership for Housing Affordability (PHA) to develop application and program details under a separate task order. The Sheriff requested funding for a dedicated traffic unit using automated speed-enforcement revenues. The proposal for eight deputies and a sergeant carried a five-year cost of about $5.53 million; an alternative of four deputies and a sergeant was estimated at about $3.124 million over five years, roughly $120,000 above the current $3.004 million balance. The board did not vote on the request and agreed to place it on the November regular-meeting agenda. Members also raised concern about relying on photo-enforcement revenue amid uncertainty about possible state changes.
The board unanimously approved VDOT maintenance agreements for lighting and landscaping at the Route 155/Kentland Trail roundabout. VDOT has fully funded and designed the project through its Highway Safety Improvement Program and expects to put construction out to bid in November. That funding makes the county’s previously allocated $350,000 available for other projects. Under the agreements, the county will cover lighting energy costs and specified repairs—including replacement of a pole estimated at $10,500—as well as landscaping maintenance.
