The first meeting of the SAU 54 (Rochester, New Hampshire) AI Screen Time Advisory Committee was held October 21, 2026. Members discussed the committee’s draft charge and work plan, which were not yet approved by the school board; the charge was expected to go before the board on November 12, with March 11, 2027 identified as a tentative deadline for final recommendations. The committee will review existing district policies and practices, identify key questions and evidence needs, and develop recommendations for the board. Members noted that the district has an acceptable-use policy but no specific policy on generative AI or screen time. Discussion focused on educational value and age-appropriate use of devices and AI, academic integrity, student data privacy and security, classroom monitoring, consistency across schools, and incorporating teacher and student perspectives while avoiding overly restrictive blanket rules.

No contract awards, vendor selections, or purchasing approvals were made. GoGuardian was discussed as an example of a classroom monitoring and management tool, not as a proposed or selected district purchase. Members also raised possible attendance at technology conferences, including one scheduled for December 2–3; the superintendent was asked to look into conference costs and whether bundled registration might be available so the board could consider funding participation. The committee agreed that members should submit up to two priority questions, along with the evidence or information needed to address each, before the next meeting.
