The Somerville Historic Preservation Commission met remotely on October 20, 2026. It approved window replacements at 23 Chester Street with the condition that the kitchen windows be wood double-hung units; approved removing and reducing an unsafe rear deck; and voted that a backyard barn at 65 Derby Street is historically significant, requiring a subsequent preservation review. At 333 Highland Avenue, the commission found the property preferably preserved and anticipated negotiating a memorandum of agreement to document the project design before demolition work proceeds. No construction contracts or procurement awards were made at this meeting.
The commission reviewed a draft annual report and discussed clarifying which applications receive staff-level review, improving coordination and filling vacant commission positions. In a Community Preservation Committee update, the chair said the committee was reviewing funding requests, including a roughly $5 million request for the Art Farm project, with financing options such as bonding still under consideration. The chair also noted that the CPC had hired a consultant during the year for historic-preservation-related work; no consultant name or contract amount was provided.
