The Salem School Committee met on October 19, 2026. The principal procurement-related discussion concerned possible school-bus stop-arm cameras under Massachusetts Chapter 399. Members discussed whether to pursue a competitive RFP or use an existing cooperative procurement for BusPatrol; no vendor was selected and no RFP or contract vote was taken. A school committee majority would need to approve any vendor agreement. Members called for more information on costs, privacy and data retention, enforcement effectiveness, vendor incentives, and alternatives such as public-awareness efforts or extended stop arms. The committee plans a future committee-of-the-whole discussion and further consultation with police and legal counsel. The committee also unanimously accepted a $1,000 Cummings Foundation community grant for Horseman School and approved the consent agenda, including warrants dated October 8 and 15. An MSBA school-building project update noted pending litigation related to the debt-exclusion vote, with no procurement action reported.
The superintendent presented the district’s three-year strategic-plan metrics and monitoring approach, covering academic progress, student readiness, staffing, attendance, belonging, and school systems; these were planning and performance-measure discussions rather than purchasing decisions. The meeting also included public comment opposing a proposed charter-school expansion and discussion of grading practices. No other contract award or purchasing decision was identified.
