The City of New Bern Historic Preservation Commission met on October 21, 2026, to consider Certificates of Appropriateness (COAs) and other preservation business. The commission approved the shutter proposal at 510 East Front Street, a non-contributing 2006 building, with design and hardware details subject to the stated follow-up review. It also approved a storefront-style door and window replacement at 408 Hancock Street, a City-owned property leased to the Children’s Museum. The commission approved an amendment to the previously approved addition at 218 Pollock Street, including changes to the walkway, windows, roof, deck, and stairs; the required walkway screening remains, and provisions of the 2024 approval not changed by the amendment remain in effect. No contract awards, bids, vendor selections, or other procurement or spending actions were identified.

The commission discussed making the draft Historic District Design Principles and Standards available for public comment after preparing a redline showing changes from the current standards; staff and commissioners will compile comments for further consideration. It also considered preservation award nominations, deferring one nominee pending an after-the-fact COA, and approved the 2027 meeting calendar, including a December 2027 meeting. The administrator reported on COAs and preservation cases in progress.
