The City of Wilmington Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met on October 21, 2026. The board unanimously approved a motion supporting the proposed Alex Chambers skate park mural and its design, which will be forwarded to City Council for consideration. The project is a collaboration with the Alec Chambers Foundation and DREAMS, and local artist Ron Luzinski was identified as the professional artist. The discussion covered durable paint and sealant, skate-community input, and the city’s inability to guarantee the mural’s restoration if it is damaged. Staff also said the city is discussing a more formal RFP process for future murals, but no process change or spending amount was approved at this meeting.

The board also received an update on open-space preservation planning, including a possible future City Council resolution to formally preserve a city-owned parcel near Hurst Drive; no purchase or funding action was taken. Members discussed improving the Adopt-a-Park form, organizing work-plan sessions, and a city transition to NextRequest public-records software, without procurement details or a spending decision.
