At its August 18, 2026 Common Council meeting, the City of Franklin considered the South 51st Street reconstruction design and related development agreements. After discussion of safety, traffic, cost, and the proposed turn lanes, the Council rejected Option C on a tie vote and approved Option B, which includes five-foot paved shoulders and a left-turn lane at Marquette Street. The estimated cost for Option B was approximately $3.4 million; the engineer said the city intended to continue design, bid the project in January, and begin construction in spring 2027. Other estimates presented were $2.8 million for replacing the existing roadway section and more than $4 million for the wider-shoulder alternative. The Council also considered a Fun Flix outdoor-movie contract and an amendment to a youth opioid-prevention grant on the consent agenda; the transcript does not clearly capture the vote on those items.
