The Standing Committee on Finance reviewed Worcester Public Schools’ FY26 closeout and FY27 first-quarter financial position on October 21, 2026. The district closed FY26 with $15,386 remaining from its adopted $525.7 million budget. The report cited facilities-maintenance procurement and supply-chain delays, increased snow-removal and custodial overtime, and year-end reallocations for student technology supplies and transportation costs. Committee motions, approved by roll call as recorded, called for ensuring each school has adequate, serviceable snow-removal equipment and for reports on bus-driver staffing and recruitment methods; these were requests and direction, not equipment purchase approvals.
For FY27, the district reported a net $1.1 million state-funding reduction, which the City of Worcester will hold harmless, and a $422,000 decrease in grant awards compared with FY26, including reductions to Title I and Title II funding. The report also noted contractual cost increases for software platforms TeachPoint and SchoolSpring, planned implementation of Workday for payroll and financial reporting beginning in January, and continuing maintenance of utility savings data from operational solar panels. Other motions sought information on return-to-work programs for employees receiving workers’ compensation benefits and a list of the seven vacant custodial positions by affected school. No contract awards, vendor selections, or specific new purchasing amounts were identified.
