📚 Education Grants & Funding

The Sullivan County Schools Board of Education monthly meeting on August 13, 2026, included a district update highlighting approximately $8 million in grant funding secured for programs and student opportunities, including a $1.4 million childcare-center grant, a $324,000 public safety grant, and about $500,000 annually through Gear Up. The director also reviewed prior ESSER-funded work totaling $25.8 million, school safety and technology improvements, and grants for pre-K, career and technical education, and other programs. The board approved the school nutrition budget amendment, grouped grant budgets and budget resolutions, and the 2026–27 general-purpose school fund budget; one member’s motion included a reservation about disputed ADM figures. The board also approved raising athletic-event admission to $6 for adults and $3 for students. No vendor or contract award was identified.

The board tabled the Southern West building property item until next month. Members discussed declining enrollment, its effect on district funding, and the risk of a future budget shortfall estimated at roughly $10–11 million. In that context, they asked about transportation contracting: 31 bus routes are expected to go out for bid after the 2026–27 school year, with the process reportedly beginning in February and contracts signed in June. Members raised concern about committing to contracts the district might later be unable to fund.
