The Gaithersburg Planning Commission met on October 21, 2026, and unanimously recommended that the Mayor and City Council consider amendments to Chapter 21, Trees and Vegetation, and the updated City Tree Manual. The code and manual updates address state requirements, clarify definitions and landscape-plan rules, and establish or clarify forest-conservation requirements for development. The manual also distinguishes tree-planting requirements for reforestation, landscaping, and stormwater management, and allows expanded stormwater standards as a possible mitigation alternative to an in-lieu fee. No contract awards, purchases, or budget allocations were discussed.
Commissioners asked about effects on already-permitted projects, recommended tree species, climate adaptability, and public access to tree-care guidance. Staff said previously approved plans would not need to reapply, while amendments would remain subject to review. Staff also described plans for a more user-friendly tree-management education resource. The commission’s two recommendations passed unanimously; no other procurement-related action was identified.
