The City of Fernley City Council meeting was held October 21, 2026. The council unanimously approved Bill No. 394, establishing the Fernley Power District as a municipal electric utility. The proposal envisions approximately $600 million in privately financed electric infrastructure, with no cost to the city or existing ratepayers, to serve large electric loads; the presentation projected service beginning in November 2028 and up to $23 million in annual city franchise-fee revenue at full buildout. The ordinance provides for a three-member board and franchise fees of 1% for loads above 10 megawatts and the standard 5% fee for smaller loads. As part of its 4–0 approval, the council requested that staff bring back an amendment adding two board members. No vendor contract award or procurement bid approval was made.

The council also voted 4–0 to end the city’s litigation with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation over the Truckee Canal environmental impact review, following an unsuccessful Ninth Circuit appeal. Other discussion included housing and eviction concerns, a forthcoming Title 16 code update, and notice that tourism grant applications will be accepted November 1–30 for the January–June 2027 grant period; no grant awards were made at this meeting.
