The Seattle Public Schools Board held a special informational study session on October 21, 2026, focused on academic outcomes and district improvement plans for third-grade reading, eighth-grade math, and graduation readiness. Staff described implementation of the board-approved Emerge literacy curriculum, including training and coaching for educators, and said the adoption cost approximately $7–9 million. The district expects implementation to take at least three years. The meeting also discussed the curriculum-adoption process, which takes about 18 months, the role of state and national standards, and the need to plan and budget for staggered future adoptions, including middle-school math. No procurement award or spending vote was taken during the meeting.
The board also reviewed school improvement plans, assessment data, coaching, professional development, high-school grade and graduation reviews, and the SchoolLinks planning tool, which is replacing Naviance. Staff reported an 88.2% on-time graduation rate for the class of 2026 and discussed how data reviews and student supports could improve outcomes. The superintendent noted that school improvement plans may inform staffing and budgets. No vendor selection, contract amount, or purchasing action for SchoolLinks was specified.
