The Van Zandt County Commissioners Court regular meeting on October 21, 2026, addressed several spending and facilities matters. The court authorized a contract with I-Ticket for automated DPS ticket uploads to the Justice of the Peace courts and approved a $2 court fee for the service. It also conditionally accepted a Texas Historical Commission grant of $9,576,428 for restoration of the historic courthouse, contingent on voter approval of a bond proposition at the May 1, 2027 election. The judge said the county’s share was estimated at roughly $15 million and that the bond would also cover renovation of the courthouse annex for temporary use during the courthouse’s planned two-to-three-year restoration. The conditional grant acceptance was approved, as were the listed subdivision plats and the consent agenda.
The consent agenda included county bills and budget amendments, including $5,800 in unbudgeted contract-service costs for migration to a new system. The court also approved longevity pay for four full-time JP clerks with at least five years’ service, stated as $300 per month and $3,600 per year in total, funded from the court technology fund, with a FY2027 salary-schedule amendment. The judge said he would bring forward a formal policy for discussion that would require contingency-fund expenditures to be presented as agenda items rather than handled as budget transfers; this was a proposed policy clarification, not an adopted decision at this meeting. The meeting also opened with announcements and remarks about the deaths and injuries from a deputy shooting and a residential fire in the county.
