The Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board meeting on October 21, 2026, included approval of the resolution to submit the FY2027 capital plan to the Arizona School Facilities Oversight Board. The plan requests funding for Phase 3 of Desert Sunrise High School, as projections show high-school enrollment exceeding current capacity by FY2029; staff said the expansion would add about 125,000 square feet. The board approved the resolution unanimously. The superintendent also reported on the Maricopa High School Workforce Development Project, thanking Core Construction, FMG, and SPS+ Architects for supporting a community event; no contract award or procurement decision for that project was presented.

Staff reported that the district’s first quarter managing substitute teachers in-house filled 75% of absences, compared with 79% under the previous vendor, ESI. The district had spent about $1.63 million on substitutes and substitute management the prior year, including a 27.5% management markup, and reported approximately $88,000 in first-quarter savings after the transition. The district aims to increase its substitute pool and raise the fill rate to 85%. No new vendor contract was approved. The board also approved the personnel schedule and adjourned to executive session for the superintendent’s evaluation.
