The October 21, 2026 Policy Review Committee meeting focused on Atlanta Public Schools’ draft instructional-use-of-artificial-intelligence policy and 2027 legislative priorities. Members supported safeguards against teachers using AI to grade student work, while discussing AI use for lesson planning, transparency, training, and regular review as the technology changes. The committee discussed surveys and additional teacher, student, and community input, including a planned community discussion on November 18; it chose to hold the AI policy for further feedback rather than advance it to first read. A motion passed to move the 2027 legislative priorities forward for first read in November, with community input and a potential final read in December.

Legislative priorities discussed included updated state school funding, including a poverty weight in the QBE formula; possible state funding to repurpose unused school buildings; protecting local board authority and the East Bloss; universal pre-K; teacher recruitment and retention; and support for school meals. Members also urged advocacy to lower a state school-size threshold from 450 to 300, citing effects on the district’s ability to sustain smaller schools, and discussed a proposal that could save APS an estimated $30–$40 million annually if the state provided support. Vaping prevention and higher-education completion rates were also raised. No contracts, vendor selections, purchases, or procurement awards were approved at the meeting.
