The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners’ regular meeting on October 20, 2026, included approval of consent agenda items 2–9 and 11–14; item 10 was pulled and then separately approved. A major project update concerned the grant-funded Douglas Center Gymnasium renovation: the county attorney reported significant construction deficiencies and schedule concerns, and said the county had notified the contractor’s performance-bond insurer. The contractor had changed project managers and increased the number of workers on site, but had not yet provided an updated completion schedule. Staff said the priority was completing the work in time to meet the grant deadline, rather than terminating the contract.

The county also discussed the temporarily closed 164th Bridge. Staff expects to return with options in November or December; estimates mentioned were several million dollars for a solution lasting about 15 years or $8 million or more for one lasting about 75 years. Commissioners discussed broader capital-funding pressures, including a $7.3 million water-tower project with $3 million identified and a possible $4.3 million EDA request. The Tourism Development Council presented a new digital marketing campaign funded through the tourist development tax, showing advertising on Meta and Google; no vendor award or campaign cost was stated. During public comment, a resident questioned proposed or consent-agenda spending, including a reported $271,000 CRA request, $50,000 for 911 call-taker salaries, and $30,000 for a conference; these were public comments, not separately stated board decisions. A data-center workshop is being planned, but no moratorium or other policy action was taken.
